Secure Delete

The ScriptingIT Secure Delete Tool was created for a business requirement that followed an audit of customer data stored locally on user computers. It was discovered that most information was cached documents opened in Microsoft Outlook which remain on the PC even if the email is deleted. Move files that have not been accessed for a given period to the users' Recycle Bin; files in Recycle Bin are then securely deleted after a given period. These tools are most commonly used for PCI compliance in businesses that deal with secure client data such as credit card details.

How it works

The tool is initiated when a user logs into a PC. It then checks the rules for file locations and days old from a central location. The tool moves files to Recycle Bin, then after a determined period, destroys the files based on rules. This gives users a chance to recover files if required and IT the control of locations scanned and timings applied.

The tool only deletes files from the logged in users locations and Recycle Bin. By default, it only accepts locations within the user profile. Projects implementing these tools generally also implement old profile deletion settings (removing users profiles that have not logged in for generally 180 days or as desired).
